Sam Merrifield spent many years serving the Essendon community. He was an ALP member of the ‎Legislative Assembly for Essendon from 1943-1955, later he was a member of the Legislative Council ‎for the seat of Doutta Galla. After retiring in 1970 he gave his time to the Essendon Historical Society; ‎‎ he also had a 22 year association with the Essendon District Football League. Following his death on ‎the 30th August, 1982, the Essendon Library was renamed in his honour and became the Sam Merrifield ‎Library which now houses the Local History Collection for the area and resources for family history ‎researchers.‎
